About this boat

Helen is a 51 foot tug style narrow boat which was built by Harris Brothers of Bumblehole in Netherton in the West Midlands in 1942 for Joseph Holloway and Sons of Oldbury later passing to Leonard Leigh and used for towing trains of joey boats from the Cannock coalfields to the Power Stations and elsewhere in the Black Country. Helen is powered by a Bolinder 1053 marine diesel engine with Bolinder’s reversing gearbox. The engine develops 35bhp and drives a 24” propeller. Layout from the rear comprises of a traditionally decorated back cabin with Epping range. Following this is the engine room housing not only the engine but the electric control system for the rest of the boat. Forward of this is the shower room with large shower, boxed in Porta Potti toilet and wash basin. Doors lead into the galley with butler sink, gas hob/grill/oven and 12v fridge. At the front of the cabin is the saloon with Morso Squirrel solid fuel stove. The seating/steps convert to a second double berth. This boat is steeped in history and a full and detailed history can be provided upon request. Recent survey completed in 2026. Current Boat Safety Certificate until May 2028. Full repaint of both the topsides and hull recently completed. Helen is a real head-turner and with her history is a talking point for canal enthusiasts and gongoozlers alike.
