10 Important Things to Check Before You Buy

Buying your first narrowboat can be exciting, but it is easy to become distracted by attractive interiors, fresh paint and clever storage. The most expensive problems are usually hidden below the waterline, behind the cabin lining or inside the engine compartment. Before paying a deposit, work through these ten essential checks.

1. Decide Where You Want to Cruise

The length and width of the boat will determine which waterways you can use. A narrowboat measuring around 57 to 60 feet is often considered a practical size for travelling across much of the connected canal network. Longer boats can offer more living space, but some northern locks and waterways have shorter length restrictions.

A 70-foot narrowboat can cruise many southern and Midlands waterways, but it will not fit through every lock in northern England. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal, for example, has locks with a maximum practical boat length of around 62 to 64 feet, depending on the route.

Widebeam boats provide more internal space, but they cannot pass through narrow locks. They are therefore limited to broad canals and rivers, and some broad-waterway areas are not connected to one another. Before choosing a boat, check the official dimensions for every waterway you may want to visit.

2. Check How the Boat Sits in the Water

Stand back and look carefully at the boat from both sides. Most narrowboats naturally sit slightly lower at the stern because of the engine and fuel tank. However, the boat should not lean heavily to one side, sit excessively low in the water or appear badly out of balance.

Look for:

  • An obvious lean to port or starboard
  • The bow or stern sitting unusually low
  • A waterline close to doors, vents or other openings
  • Signs that the boat has an unusually deep draught
  • An uneven or artificial-looking painted waterline

A badly trimmed boat may have incorrect ballast, water trapped beneath the floor or excessive weight from alterations and overplating. Correcting the ballast on a fully fitted boat can involve lifting floors, removing furniture and dismantling parts of the interior.

3. Treat Overplating With Caution

Overplating means welding new steel over areas of the original hull. It is often carried out when the old steel has become thin or badly pitted. Overplating is not automatically a reason to reject a boat. A properly designed and professionally completed repair can extend the life of a hull. However, poor overplating can create serious problems.

Ask for:

  • The date the work was completed
  • Invoices and photographs
  • The name of the boatyard or welder
  • The thickness of the new steel
  • Details of which sections were plated
  • A survey completed after the work
  • Evidence that the boat’s trim and ballast were checked afterwards

New steel adds weight and may make the boat sit deeper in the water. Poorly fitted plates may also trap moisture between the old and new steel. Never accept a seller’s description of the work without having it inspected independently.

4. Find Out the Original Steel Specification

Many modern narrowboats were built using a steel specification described as 10/6/4:

  • 10 mm bottom plate
  • 6 mm hull sides
  • 4 mm cabin sides and roof

However, this is not universal. Older boats may have started with thinner steel, while some builders used heavier material. Try to obtain the original builder’s specification, construction records or previous surveys. This allows your surveyor to estimate how much steel has been lost through corrosion. The present condition of the hull is more important than the original thickness, but knowing the starting specification provides useful context.

5. Commission Your Own Independent Survey

Never rely solely on a survey supplied by the seller or one completed several years ago. Arrange for your own qualified marine surveyor to inspect the boat. For most older steel narrowboats, the boat should be removed from the water and placed in a dry dock or on a slipway.

A pre-purchase survey may include:

  • Hull thickness measurements
  • Inspection of welds and plating
  • Examination of the rudder and stern gear
  • Engine and mechanical observations
  • Gas and electrical checks
  • Inspection for leaks, damp and structural problems
  • Assessment of the interior fit-out
  • Identification of urgent and future repairs

Make sure the surveyor is independent and does not work for the seller, broker or boatyard carrying out any proposed repairs. If a seller refuses to allow an out-of-water inspection, treat this as a serious warning sign.

6. Ask for Detailed Ultrasonic Hull Testing

The surveyor should use an ultrasonic thickness gauge to measure the remaining steel. Measurements should be taken across a sensible grid rather than at only a few convenient points. Special attention should be given to:

  • The hull sides around the waterline
  • The bottom plate where accessible
  • The chines, where the bottom and sides meet
  • The bow and stern
  • The swims near the propeller
  • The counter and uxter plate
  • Areas showing visible rust or pitting
  • Previous repairs and overplating

Pitting is particularly important. A hull may appear generally thick while containing individual deep corrosion craters. Readings approaching or below 4 mm may cause insurance difficulties or lead to repair requirements. However, there is no single universal thickness rule — insurers and surveyors consider the original construction, location of the damage, depth of pitting and overall condition of the hull. Ask the surveyor to explain the readings and identify which repairs are essential, recommended or simply preventative.

7. Inspect the Rudder, Stern Gear and Weed Hatch

The stern of the boat contains several important components that can be costly to repair. Check for excessive movement in the rudder and rudder stock. Some movement is normal, but serious looseness can indicate worn bearings or structural problems.

The stern gland seals the propeller shaft where it passes through the hull. A traditional greased stern gland may drip slightly while the shaft is turning, but it should not leak heavily.

The weed hatch allows access to the propeller. It must have:

  • A secure fastening system
  • A sound rubber seal
  • Solid surrounding steelwork
  • No corrosion around the trunking
  • A cover that seats correctly

A badly sealed or incorrectly secured weed hatch can allow large quantities of water into the engine compartment.

8. Check the Anodes and Electrical Protection

Sacrificial anodes are attached to the hull to help protect the steel from corrosion. Freshwater narrowboats normally use magnesium anodes. Anodes gradually wear away and must eventually be replaced. Completely exhausted anodes may indicate that the boat has gone too long between inspections, although they do not automatically prove that serious electrical corrosion is occurring. Ask when the anodes were last replaced and look for unusual or uneven corrosion around them.

For a boat regularly connected to marina shore power, also check for:

  • A functioning galvanic isolator or isolation transformer
  • Correct shore-power wiring
  • Proper electrical bonding
  • Signs of stray-current corrosion
  • Recent electrical inspection records

An electrical specialist may be needed if the surveyor suspects galvanic or stray-current problems.

9. Examine the Engine, Bilges and Onboard Systems

Do not be distracted by a freshly painted engine compartment. Ask to see the engine started from cold. A warm engine may hide starting problems, smoke or unusual noises.

Check:

  • Engine oil level and condition
  • Coolant level and signs of antifreeze leaks
  • Diesel leaks
  • Exhaust smoke
  • Engine mounts
  • Drive belts and hoses
  • Gearbox operation
  • Charging voltage
  • Service history
  • Stern gland leakage
  • Rust or water in the engine bilge

A small amount of old staining may be common, but pools of oil, diesel, coolant or water require investigation. Also test the domestic systems:

  • Batteries and charging equipment
  • Inverter
  • Shore-power connection
  • Water pump
  • Water heater or calorifier
  • Central heating
  • Toilet system
  • Shower drain pump
  • Gas appliances
  • Fridge and cooker
  • Freshwater tank
  • Waste tank, where fitted

Repairing several minor systems at once can quickly become expensive.

10. Check the BSS, Ownership and Paperwork

A Boat Safety Scheme certificate is normally valid for four years. It checks specified safety matters involving areas such as gas, fuel, ventilation, electrics and fire risks. However, a current BSS certificate is not the same as a full condition survey. It does not guarantee that the hull, engine or interior is in good condition.

Ask to see:

  • The current BSS certificate
  • The boat’s registration and licence details
  • Bills of sale showing the ownership history
  • The original builder’s certificate, where available
  • Previous surveys
  • Receipts for hull repairs and overplating
  • Engine service records
  • Appliance manuals and certificates
  • Evidence that there is no outstanding finance or marine mortgage
  • Proof that the seller has the right to sell the boat

There is no ordinary V5-style logbook for every narrowboat. A clear chain of bills of sale is therefore particularly important. Some boats may be registered on Part 1 of the UK Ship Register. If so, check the registration and whether any mortgage is recorded. When buying through a broker, ask whether your deposit and final payment will be held in a properly segregated client account. Read the sale agreement carefully and make sure the purchase remains subject to a satisfactory survey where appropriate.

Final Advice for First-Time Buyers

Do not buy a narrowboat based only on its interior appearance. A dated but dry and structurally sound boat may be a much better purchase than a beautifully fitted boat with a thin hull, poor overplating or neglected machinery.

Before committing, calculate the likely cost of:

  • The survey and lifting the boat out
  • Hull repairs
  • Blacking and anodes
  • Insurance
  • Canal or river licence
  • Mooring fees
  • Engine servicing
  • Battery replacement
  • Heating and electrical repairs
  • Toilet and water-system maintenance
  • Future repainting

Most importantly, be prepared to walk away. There will always be another boat, and losing the cost of a survey is far cheaper than buying a narrowboat with major hidden problems.
